Karin came by the radio station around the time we began broadcasting on the FM band January 15, 1987. She was one of those in-disposable ones, the precious few who eat and breathe what they do. She served on the board of directors, the music committee, did three different shows and survived doing a weekly overnight slot programming six hours of unregulated airtime to do whatever she wanted to do. So it was great talking with her again after so many years.

Best story: about meeting John Peel and being invited to come down to BBC to watch him do his show.

Peter Stamp was off this week and I apologize about the air quality. We've been having troubles with the map room studio phone lately so I've tried to eq it best I can.

Laura Disenhaus was a part of CIUT's feminist program collective By all Means back in the 1980s. She began doing radio at Western U and when she came to U of T she sought out the radio station. She's a doer with a great radio voice. This interview explores Blue Rodeo Drive, the Don Valley Jail, Moe Koffman, Margaret Atwood, the flute and well, it went places.

We tried to get our guest recorded but, as some times happens, we hit an iceberg. So, instead, Peter Stamp and I spoke about whatever came into our minds and it was good, and it was fun, and so here it is. Next week, it's back to interviewing a guest.

Brooke Blackburn, one of the three revolving hosts of Calling All Blues, has a fascinating family history. His father was one of Toronto's original Rock n' Rollers in the '50s. Brooke plays guitar in his Blackburn Brothers band.

Hans Burgschmidt began producing Undercurrents back in 1989. This CIUT program ran for a decade then Hans burned out. 25 years later we reconnect so we find out what Hans has been up to. And yes, I did cut the interview short coz I had to pee! But anyway, it was a good interview which i'm sure you'll enjoy.

Radio Recall 53 - Career Buzz

Saturday Nov 30, 2024

Saturday Nov 30, 2024

Today's guests are Mark Franklin and Hota Kilani of Career Buzz, a CIUT program that debuted in 2006 and is still going strong. With a strong cast of characters doing the interviews, the show is about the art of listening to peoples' stories, their successes and failures and where it all led them. It's a fascinating topic that affects each and every one of us. As my cohort Peter Stamp stated: we all need a check up from the neck up. So with that said, here's our own check up on Career Buzz.

Lenora Taylor spent 14 yrs volunteering her services at CIUT. It s her father, Phil Taylor (of the Taylor Report*) who suggested that she get involved with the radio station and it turned out to be very good advice. She spoke to us from her construction site - she does renovations - by phone so there a few hammers and a jackhammer at times.
Her mother, Simone (Johnston) was in The Travellers.
*You can hear our interview with Phil Taylor from Spotify. Just search out Radio Recall and he's number 14.

RR 51 - Peter Rowe

Sunday Nov 10, 2024

Sunday Nov 10, 2024

Peter Rowe hit Toronto from his home in Hearts Content, Newfoundland in 1964 when he was 18. He and his wife Carol have been volunteering their time, twice a year, answering phones during CIUT's funding drives. The interview goes all over the place. We discussed radio in Toronto and Newfoundland, hospital visits with Foster Hewitt; The Mothers of Invention, Kinky Friedman and Joni Mitchel smoking cigarettes at Toronto's Hugh's Room. Lots of fun!
